The music the dancers perform onto in this amazing video is considered by many as the very first Techno track: it is called Sharevari, played by A Number of Names. Others will say that the first Techno piece of work is to be attributed to Alleys of your mind by Cybotron, Juan Atkins’ band. This latter was released at the same period, and the aficionados said at the time that Sharevari was too anchored in its Italo Disco style.
In those days, the Sharevari club was the place to be in Detroit, as a kind of local Studio 54. The eponymous song deals with a night lifestyle filled with Porshes, Playmates, great white wines, hipsters from around the globe and of course, good music.
This extract comes from The Scene, the popular American show. Its concept was simple and fashionable on TV during the Disco tidal wave : to leave an amateur dancer dressed like Travolta in Saturday Night Fever on a dance floor, then put the music on and let the magic working.
Sharevari was updated a few years ago for its 20th anniversary, while electro-clash style was hitting the jackpot, especially by Ectopmorph, Adult., The Hacker & Vitalic, and Eddie Fowlkes.
At the end of the extract, a little allusion is made to the host, who seems to be in the mood also… at least, on his way.
Lyrics :
Some bread and cheese and fine white wine
Designer chic is a matter of time
Could this be the real thing?
Or is this just another fling?
Seen by millions nationally
L’oumo Vogue, Playgirl, G Quarterly
Because he’s down on his etiquette
Shari Vari is really it
Shari Vari
Shari Shari Vari
Smoking on his cigarette
Listening to his car cassette
Cruising with his hot playmate
In his Porsche Nine Two Eight
Heading for the highest heights
For the climax of the night
The people there they just won’t quit
Because the music’s really it
Shari Vari
Shari Shari Vari

Shari Shari Vari
Smoking on his cigarette
Listening to his car cassette
Cruising with his hot playmate
In his Porsche Nine Two Eight
Heading for the highest heights
For the climax of the night
The people there they just won’t quit
Because the music is really it
